Meanwhile, Comex copper futures are now trading around $3.65 per pound.
While copper prices slipped Friday along with other commodities, the most actively traded copper futures are still 2% higher so far in 2021 and near their highest level since early 2013, the Wall Street Journal reports.
Copper markets have strengthened on strong demand from China and bets that the improving global economy will support consumption of raw materials later this year.
Copper is among the necessary components of construction and is used to build everything from computers to houses. Consequently, the base metal is highly sensitive to shifts in the global economy and the Chinese economy, which makes up the lion’s share of demand – China is the world’s largest commodity consumer and makes up about half of global demand for copper and other metals.

iTHRIV announces recipients of health research pilot projects
The Clinical and Translational Science Award (CTSA) hub partnership between Virginia Tech, the University of Virginia, Carilion Clinic, and Inova Health System has awarded $200,000 in funding to five research projects through the Pilot Translational and Clinical Studies Program.
Multi-institutional teams of scientists, physicians, and engineers will study Parkinson s disease, celiac disease, pediatric heart transplant, pediatric telemedicine, and epilepsy.
Locally, the CTSA partners administer the grants through the integrated Translational Health Research Institute of Virginia (iTHRIV). iTHRIV is funded by the National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences, part of the National Institutes of Health, through award number UL1TR003015.

Capesize freight rates have touched a three-month high in January as supply chain bottlenecks from poor weather conditions across the Chinese coast and high commodity prices helped drive up demand for tonnage shipping, S&P Global reports.
